Race Route Description

All team members will begin in their boat, except for their runner, who will start in a chair on the beach. Once the starting horn is sounded, the runner will run to and enter their boat, at which point teams will begin to paddle.

Teams will head straight for approximately 50m until they reach the first buoy. At the first buoy, teams will make a 90 degree right turn, then race around a rocky point and toward the Baton Pick-up location on the shore. Once the boat reaches the shore, one team member must exit the boat and pick-up one baton from the beach. After that team member has re-entered the boat with the baton, the team will head back out towards the second buoy, where they will make a 90 degree left turn. From there, teams will head to the third and final buoy where they will make their final 90 degree left turn towards the finish line.

Upon reaching the shore, the team member wearing the team's race number will jump out of the boat, carrying their baton and run up the beach to hit the gong.

Racing Equipment

UBC REC will supply all equipment, including PFD's (Personal Flotation Device) and paddles. Participants are allowed to bring their own PFD if so desired, but UBC REC paddles must be used. Different sized PFD's and paddles will be available.

Race & Safety Regulations

For safety reasons, the following will result in an automatic disqualification:

1. Grabbing onto another participant’s equipment (paddle, PDF, or boat).
2. Using the paddle for something other than moving the boat through the water.
3. Leaving the boat other than at the baton pick-up tent and the end of the race.
4. Paddling through a team that has tipped.
5. Drinking alcohol or suspected of being intoxicated.
6. Intentionally inhibiting another team’s ability to race.
7. Registering without the appropriate photo identification.
8. The runner who will be picking up the baton must wear footwear when running to the baton tent. Depending on the tide, the beach can be very rocky so barefeet are prohibitted.

Please note: If your boat tips, the Jericho Rescue team will come to bail out your boat. Please stay with your boat until they arrive.
